Bees

These little insects are undoubtedly one of our favorites. They are generally gentle and good-natured. They sting only when necessary. They are extraordinary pollinators and outstanding producers, generating some of the world's best culinary items. They are master architects and are generally entertaining to watch as they flutter about flowers in quest of pollen.

At the moment, bee colonies are declining. There are three primary causes of this issue, the first of which is the Varroa mite. The second reason is that hybrid blooms make it more difficult for the bee to discover pollen-bearing blossoms. The third type is "Hive Abandonment Syndrome," which occurs when the hive is disturbed excessively. Combine the three and you have a fairly terrible situation. Pesticide misuse is quite low on the list of causes, and the majority of pesticide application "Best Practices" avoid treating any area that would damage these magnificent animals.

Identification

Regrettably, they have a terrible reputation due to their resemblance to other pests such as yellow jackets, wasps, and some species of hornets. In truth, they are diametrically opposed - if a bee strikes you, it is almost always fatal; all other stinging pests are armed with multi-purpose weaponry. They are sometimes mistaken with Yellow Jackets due to their similar body proportions and structure. Bees, on the other hand, have hairy bodies with bigger abdomens and a more orange hue. Yellow Jackets have a more slender abdomen covered in brilliant yellow bands and with few hairs. Therefore, if you notice a little fuzzy orange bee buzzing about your flowers, leave it alone. He is only seeking pollen from your blooms.

The best solutions

Though it is improbable, if you do discover a bees' nest in your house, give us a call. We work with a local beekeeper and can relocate the colony with minimal disruption to the hive. If you observe them swarming on a tree limb outside your home and they are interfering with your typical outdoor activities, we can easily remove the swarming branch and nurture the hive, giving it a chance to continue to flourish.

What you can do to help them

Numerous hybrid blooms generate little to no pollen yet are nonetheless enticing to the bee, which finds nothing when it comes. It's the equivalent of going to the grocery store in search of food and seeing that the shelves are empty. A easy strategy to counteract this is to grow pollen-producing flowers around your house and in your landscape, if possible. This will provide them with some of the nutrients they require to thrive, and those of us without allergies will enjoy from the lovely smells that will pervade the nearby vicinity. Additionally, adding a patch of clover in your yard may assist; clover is a fast-growing pollen-producing flower that attracts bees.
